The fight for remembrance II, 2014

oil on canvas • 62 x 50 inches
About the Work

White, abstract expressionist-like brushstrokes at once obscure and reveal portions of a standing black solider. His gloved hands, the contours of his uniform, rifle and the determined expression on his are all that remain visible of the detailed original work. Painted black lines and circles “sketch” the contour of his form back into the composition and from beneath the energetic strokes of white paint. The soldier’s weapon is rendered boldly into the foreground, fully realized and almost floating in front of his chest. This piece is currently on view at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery through February 6, 2018.
